Victory Empulse RR Took On The Pikes Peak

Making an appearance at the 100th Anniversary Pikes Peak International Hill Climb was the Victory Empulse RR and Cycle World's Don Canet gives us a blow-by-blow description of his run.

Canet had to ride a Victory Empulse RR through less than optimal conditions that day. As a racing version of the Victory Empulse TT, the RR is equipped with repackaged battery cells for more capacity, new motor windings and an updated control system among other things. The exact specs of the electric racing bike has not been released, but Lee Johnston did manage to hit a top speed of 145 mph on it.

The night before the race, a storm had passed through so trucks had to be displaced to break some ice covering a stretch of the trail. On top of the wet pavement, there was an oil spill from a car earlier that week and it was still there during the race. The electric bike class was the first race of the day, thus giving the pavement no time to warm up and dry. As the rider with the fastest bike, Canet was the lead man which means heís going to be the first rider to hit any unsavoury stretches of road.

On a track filled with hairpin turns and rises, any mistake on the riderís end could prove fatal. While taking on the 100-mph double left leading into Upper Gravel Pit, he came upon the oil spill and thatís here he felt a hint of front tire movement. He relaxed his turn, but another slip hit him and he was soon riding on the dirt at speed. Luckily Canet managed to get back on track.

He finished with a time of 10:17.813 which puts him in first place among the remaining electric bikes, but he didnít take home the overall crown as the Kawasaki Z1000 won with a time of 10:13.106.

Not bad top speed to be hit but what i'm going to be more interested in is how fast it got to that point since electric power trains are known to be fast off the line and on a bike that can make for a very exciting ride, maybe a nerve wracking one too.

That's the thing.. with so much torque right off the line, I would be terribly afraid to really give it straight off the bat. I can just imagine being thrown back or spinning the rear tire heavy. The power delivery is really questionable.

Well off the line can be smoothed out with gearing and how they decide to let us use that power. Giving different riding modes will be best and with an electric setup it can't be that hard. Plus this way they can cater to a larger audience and ultimately that's what they want.

True.. didn't think about that. Making different riding modes for a full EV would be pretty simple. Literally just changing values in a ecm. Let's hope there's a track setting with launch control lol

track setting as great as it is, we might have to get some optional set of tires just to get to truly experience the sport mode I doubt they'll be willing to throw in a higher end tire without an additional cost to it. what sucks about this is its hard to point out a specific tire since there might be a tire coming out just for this.

You mean something with a low-rolling resistance right ? I've heard, using just a regular tire can make a very noticeable difference to your range

friction seems to be what's being targeted on an industry level when it comes to production of these tires, so that's what we'll likely see more of along with increased range which for an electric bike will be a selling point.

however I can't imagine many owners deviating from OEM tires, demographics say most riders will be regular street riders, there's only so much you need in that instance.
